Too Good To Be True

"Your just to good to be true, can't take my eyes off of you............."

During the shopping portion of my "stay-cation", I ran across a Cd of the Broadway show "Jersey Boys". I had seen the show in Toledo with my daughter last fall and really enjoyed it. The show followed the formation and careers of the members of the Four Seasons and this disc included dialogue as well. I had found it touching that Frankie Valli had always wanted to sing a song with trumpets and brass, and late in his career, his partner wrote one for him. But true to form, getting the "right" to sing it would prove to be difficult. They had sold millions of  other records but still needed permission to record a new one on a massive scale.

Frankie laments, "my guy (Bobby Laguardio)  and his crew wrote one just for me, a solo number, but the president of the label wasn't interested, "I dunno Bobby, too hard to be pop, too soft to be rock." Frankie was exasperated, "You wanna get a hit song, its like the stations of the cross, you gotta get past the record company, the program directors, the deejays, and if you're lucky, you get to the people."

Seconds after Franki finishes speaking,  you hear  the wonderful brass intro of "You're Just Too Good to be True."   That beautiful song would have never been heard by anyone had not Franki dreamed it, Bobby wrote it,  the band performed it and those who persisted in getting it  to the people.

Listening to that Cd in the car for the last couple of weeks, I never cease to smile when I hear that special song play. A gentle reminder that many, many people have never understood the songs that a few   parishioners kept, humming, singing, and even belting out! My mantras now include: "it's like the stations of the cross....." and I know that if we are lucky, we will finally get through all the layers of those who mean well, but don't feel the music.....and we will get to the people. Wow! The work is definitely worth it once you hear people start to sing in unison. That JOY !

Just to Good to be True!
